It was a beautiful fall day so we headed out to the school forest to explore nature. The students had fun practicing their nature photography skills. We also sat quietly for 10 minutes just listening to the sounds of the forest.

We have been learning a lot about monarch butterflies this fall. So far we have released 6 butterflies and we have one chrysalis that should emerge soon.
Welcome to the new school year! This is going to be a strange year, but I am so excited to be back in the classroom. With the COVID19 pandemic, we will be making a few changes - desks are spread out, masks will be worn, students will be socially distanced - but the basics of second grade will still be the same. We will be learning and having fun exploring the world. We will be reading some wonderful stories and practicing our reading skills. We will be working with numbers and exploring math. Let's get this school year started! I start every school year with a monarch butterfly science unit. The wonder of a crawly little caterpillar turning into a beautiful butterfly is a perfect way to get students interested in the natural world. We have released 24 butterflies so far this year. I think that is a new record for me! Every morning I can't wait to unlock my classroom door and see how many new butterflies have emerged. When the kids arrive at 8:10, they are even more excited! There is nothing better, than seeing the small little orange and black monarchs flying up into the sky as they start their migration to Mexico.
The classroom library is organized. The desks are all labeled. The bulletin boards are up. Let the school year begin!
I am so proud of Hill City School. We have amazing custodians who are constantly improving our facility. We have caring office staff who take the time to greet every single person who comes through our school doors. Hill City teachers are an incredible group of hard working educators who want to build relationships with every student in our school. This classroom is ready, but it isn't complete without the 20 second graders who will soon come through the door. I can't wait to spend 9 months exploring the world with them. It is going to be a great year! Today the class did our first STEM engineering challenge. They had to build a snow ramp out of cardstock and cubes. Then they slid bottle and can lids down their ramp. Students worked hard to try to figure out how to get their lids to go the farthest distance. We had a great discussion about friction and gravity which will flow right into our next science unit. |
