Today we walked to the bank with the money we raised for the Coins for Vets program. It was over $400! With this money, we will be making some care packages for local vets and military members in the upcoming months.

For the last week we have been collecting Coins for Vets. The fifth graders decorated milk jugs that were placed in each classroom. They made announcements on the school intercom and designed flyers to send home with the students advertising our fund raiser. Each day we collected the money and dumped it into a giant container. This week we are going to head to the bank to get it counted.
We will use this money to make care packages to send to area veterans and military members on active duty. If you know anyone who could use a care package, please contact me! For the last month our classroom has been filled with stinky bread mold as we learn about the scientific method in science. The students worked in teams to make hypotheses on what causes mold to grow on bread. Then they had to design an experiment with two identical slices of bread. They learned about dependent and control variables as they set up their experiments.
Some groups tested moisture by spraying one slice of bread with water. Some groups treated one slice with salt. Other groups tested heat, germs, and chemicals applied to the bread. Each day the groups recorded how much mold was growing on the bread. We will be analyzing our findings next week with a graph and some deep thought and discussion. We have been studying biology in science and so we started with the basic unit of life, the cell! The 5th graders must know the basic parts of a plant and animal cell, so we have been learning these parts many different ways. We acted it out, we drew diagrams and today we made an edible model using candy. Hopefully this will help everyone remember the parts for our quiz on Friday - plus it tasted pretty good!
