For the last month our classroom has been filled with stinky bread mold as we learn about the scientific method in science. The students worked in teams to make hypotheses on what causes mold to grow on bread. Then they had to design an experiment with two identical slices of bread. They learned about dependent and control variables as they set up their experiments.
Some groups tested moisture by spraying one slice of bread with water. Some groups treated one slice with salt. Other groups tested heat, germs, and chemicals applied to the bread. Each day the groups recorded how much mold was growing on the bread. We will be analyzing our findings next week with a graph and some deep thought and discussion.
